GLP-1 Experience in Japan: Review of eLife Clinic

Over the past year, I’ve been working on improving my health and losing weight. So far, I’ve managed to mostly stay on track, but the constant issue of “food noise” and sticking to meal plans has always been difficult for me.
GLP-1 injections like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have been on my radar ever since they first started becoming popular. I’d read about other people’s experiences getting them in Japan and had always been curious about trying them myself. While researching different clinics and prescription options, a friend recommended eLife Clinic after having a positive experience using their service. Since they offered an English website, online consultations, and delivery across Japan, it seemed like one of the easiest and most accessible options available.
So, here’s my quick guide to how I got my GLP-1 medication in Japan. This isn’t a sponsored post, just my personal experience and honest thoughts after using the service myself. After comparing the medications, I personally chose Mounjaro injections, but you should do ample research to determine which medication is best for you and your goals.
About eLife Clinic Japan
eLife Clinic is an online medical clinic based in Tokyo that provides various medications to people across Japan. I first heard about it online, especially from people discussing medications like Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy for weight loss. They also offer things like emergency contraceptives (morning-after pill) and hair loss treatments.
For many people living in Japan, especially non-Japanese speakers, it’s a convenient option because the clinic offers both English support and an English-language website.
Health insurance coverage for GLP-1 injections in Japan
eLife Clinic does not accept health insurance, so the full cost of treatment is entirely out of pocket.
It is possible to get GLP-1 injections prescribed in Japan under National Health Insurance but you have to go through your local healthcare provider. These medications are still relatively new in Japan, and not all doctors are familiar with GLP-1 treatments or able to prescribe them.
To qualify for insurance-covered GLP-1 medication for weight loss, you generally need to meet specific criteria. This usually includes having a high BMI along with weight-related medical conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, or similar health concerns. Your doctor may also require a monitoring period (often six months), regular blood work, and proof that you have already tried other weight loss methods first.
The cost is dramatically lower if you qualify through health insurance, but the process to get a prescription can be lengthy and may not be available in all areas of Japan. If you prefer your health be monitored closely by a healthcare professional, or qualify for insurance coverage, it is worth looking into getting your medication prescribed from a local doctor. If you are okay paying the full price without insurance coverage and are willing to monitor your own health closely, online services like eClinic are a good option.
What GLP-1 medications are available from eLife Clinic?
Before choosing any GLP-1 medication, I strongly recommend doing extensive research into possible side effects, expected results, and any medication interactions with prescriptions you already take.
Because these medications are prescribed online, you won’t necessarily have the benefit of regular in-person checkups. That means you are largely responsible for monitoring your own health and symptoms while taking them.
If you have questions during the process, you can contact eLife Clinic through their English phone support or support chat.

Understanding the subscription service
When I ordered from eLife Clinic, I learned that medications are handled through a monthly subscription system.
The first month is usually offered at a discounted rate, although promotions change throughout the year. After that, a regular monthly price applies. Be sure to read the details carefully before ordering so you understand the ongoing monthly cost.
For example, I signed up for a Mounjaro subscription. I paid a discounted first-month price of ¥14,980 for four doses, then agreed to pay ¥19,980 per month afterward. The subscription required a minimum commitment of two months before I could cancel or make changes.
It’s also important to read the fine print regarding shipment timing and subscription changes. You can pause or delay shipments if you need to take a break from the medication or if you know you’ll be traveling.
Tip: If you add eLife Clinic on LINE before ordering, you can usually get an additional ¥2,500 discount on your first purchase.

How I ordered from eLife Clinic
Honestly, the process of getting my Mounjaro prescription was incredibly easy. Everything was done online and over the phone, and within three days of ordering, I was able to start the medication.
Step 1
Visit eLife Clinic English website and browse the available medications. I personally signed up for this Mounjaro subscription.
Step 2
Purchase the subscription online. Payment is required before the doctor consultation takes place. If the doctor denies your prescription for any reason, you receive a refund.
Step 3
Schedule a phone consultation with the doctor. During the booking process, you’ll answer basic questions about your weight, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking.
Step 4
The doctor calls you at the scheduled time you chose. In my case, I booked the appointment for the very next day after purchasing.
During the call, they reviewed the medical history that I provided, current medications, and asked whether I had any questions or concerns. The entire consultation took less than five minutes.
Step 5
Once approved, the medication ships immediately. I received mine 2 days after speaking with the doctor.
Before starting any GLP-1 medication, make sure you research how to properly store, handle, and inject it.
* If you need to increase your dosage in the future, you’ll need another consultation with the eLife doctor first. An increased dosage will cost more.
My Experience with Mounjaro
I’ll continue updating this post weekly as I progress through my experience using Mounjaro in Japan, including side effects, weight loss results, dosage changes, and overall thoughts over time.
